Columnar cactus, usually branched from the ground up, reaching up to 7 metres in height.
In some specimens the main stem is indistinguishable.
The cylindrical, dark green stems are 8 to 15 cm in diameter.
They have 5 to 14 broad, rounded ribs with deep indents in each areole.
3 to 7 spines, if they have them, are brown in colour.
Outdoors, it withstands the cold well, but not frost.
The flowers are very large and white. They open at night and then fade in the morning.
